Tip #4

In the past, have you made New Year’s Resolutions for a “new year” and “new you” and then fell off track? Chances are pretty good… because this happens to all of us.

Here’s my theory: the best recipe for sucess is to focus on creating new habits.

For example, I was chatting with my girlfriend tonight about my commitment to clean up my diet. I said, “You know what, I just LIKE sugar in my ONE coffee every morning. It’s just the way it is. I don’t know if I’ll give it up.” She pointed out that this is a habit. I agreed, and acknowledged that for a period of time I gave up sugar in my coffee and was A-Okay with it. We talked about me buying some SUGAR-FREE almond milk to create a new habit.

In the spirit of a new year, now is the time to set yourself up for habits and systems that paves the way for a new track ALL YEAR LONG.

Set up your bank account so that a certain amount of money is automatically directed to a savings account every month. Set up auto-pay on your bills so that you pay on time and avoid late fees. Cut up your credit card and use cash to get over the habit of your quick swiping and overspending.

Sign up for a weekly exercise class to get in the habit of doing an activity on a certain day every week. Commit to taking the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator. Walk the kids to school instead of driving them.

Spend the first or last ten minutes of your day reading a book about love and relationships. Write “date night” on your calendar every Friday or Saturday night – and make plans for this weekend with a single who catches your eye, or with your eye-catching partner. Throw out the underwear that you don’t feel sexy in anymore, and go for the sexy ones.

You get the idea. With the energy of renewal and positivity in the air, commit to yourself that you are going to focus on creating new habits this month. You ARE going to get yourself into a new rhythm.

Big changes don’t happen overnight. We know that we need to shift day by day, and step by step.

Make a list RIGHT NOW of 10 or MORE new habits that you are committing to creating this month.
